Backdated post. Actual event took place on 12 October 2006.
After 12 days of enjoying all the good Korean food and snacks, Nicole is back to reality.
I’m not too sure what Korea has done to her, somehow she looks cuter. Don’t you all agree?
Heading off work a little earlier today since I promised to have dinner with my cute cuzzie.
But still, got stuck with last minute request and thankfully my sister is there to keep Nicole entertained.
Jason decided to join us and brought us to Aik Yuen Hokkien Mee, a road side stall located right behind Hospital Tawakal. This place is quite popular among the locals. I recall visiting this place one for supper back then with my friends, but didn’t had much since it was already super late back then.
So I guess this is considered my official first time trying most of their popular dishes here.
Like they famous saying, good good food must be shared with people who enjoys it.
While there are only four of us, we ordered as if there were 6 of us.
One could imagine that our table is filled with plates and plates of dish and it is practically for us to find space to put our own bowl.
My sister kept telling us that this shop’s specialty is “Stir Fried Bak Gwo” which literally are stir fried sliced rice cake, but the first thing that came to mind was stir fried ginkgo since we called ginkgo the same in Chinese.
The texture of Stir Fried Bak Gwo is pretty interesting.
It’s like eating thinly sliced “tong yuen” in savoury sauce, which in a way not surprising since “tong yuen” is also known as glutinous rice balls.
Just somehow when stir fried with meat and vegetables it just gives a different vibe from the usual sweet based dessert.
Aside, we also ordered the famous Hokkien Mee too.
I love how they cooked the Hokkien Mee using charcoal stove. This method of cooking the dish is a dying art.
The texture of the noodles is soft yet chewy and the thickening of the sauce is just on point.
No wonder it tasted so good and it is one of their signature dish here.
We also ordered Stir Fried Kam Heong Lala and Fried Calamari which became an instant hit.
Everything disappeared in less than 10 minutes from the moment it landed on our table which is a great sign. That means more place for other dishes to come.
The Fried Fish Cake is also one of their specialty dish where we could see almost every table ordered a plate of this as snacks.
I really love how fresh and tasty these were, and the texture was just bouncy and juicy.
It was fried to perfection. Soft, bouncy and juicy on the inside, and crunchy on the outside. Perfect 😘!
Stir Fried Pork Intestine is not a dish Nicole would enjoy as she hardly eats any pig’s organs.
We ordered a small portion for us to try but it ended up almost the same size as the other dishes.
Me and my sister almost filled up our stomach with this dish since only the both of us are enjoying this dish.
If I were to rate, this dish surely has the lowest score as it is a little too sweet for my liking.
We also ordered a Pork and Vegetable Soup, which is not something Nicole would fancy since she hate greens and she always wanted to be a living proof of humans don’t need vegetables to survive or have good and healthy skin.
However she do enjoy the pork meat in the soup since it is silky smooth as they coat the meat with a lot of tapioca starch to make the meat smooth and tender.
